Ahavat Chaiyai (“Love of my life”) – This is one of the first Mizrachi pop songs to gain a wider audience in Israel. The lyrics are all in Hebrew, and the music is a melding of Arabic musical influences and rock music instrumentation. Listening to this song makes me miss Israel intensely. For a few months many years ago, Elana and I had an apartment around the corner from the Shuk in Jerusalem – the Nachlaot neighborhood. If a shokeeper in the Shuk had a radio playing in the background, this is the sort of song you would hear.
Like many songs of this genre, despite being secular in nature, this one includes a strong allusion to the Tanach. In this case, it’s to the second chapter of the Song of Songs: Ḥabatselet ha-Sharon, Shoshanat ha-amakim (“Rose of Sharon, Lilly of the Valley”) Learn More.
