Free’s guitarist, Paul Kossoff, was the grandson of Russian Jews who immigrated to the UK. Kossoff, who died at the age of 25, has been ranked 51st on Rolling Stone’s list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”

This is a great band I’ve been following for a few years. They are a New York based Americana/Bluegrass group created by the husband/wife team of Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff.
‘Tree of Life’ was a song they wrote after the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh
They are open and vocal about their Jewish heritage and beautifully weave Jewish tradition and soul into their American roots music.They are on tour now! Go catch them if you can!

I studied with the composer, Abraham Kaplan, when I lived in New York. He was originally from Israel and the best conductor I’ve ever known. His own compositions are from the Hebrew bible including a series of choral pieces based on psalms and also based on the kaddish. But I also sang other works with him including a requiem mass. I first heard this singer sing the Star Spangled Banner at a 2024 Oct 7th memorial at Nationals Stadium. His voice is astonishing. He sings some beautiful, fun songs, but unfortunately, this particular song is a gut punch.
