This iconic anthem is about hope, perseverance, and faith in uncertain times.

Omer tie-in: The Omer is a time of spiritual refinement in the wilderness—we’re halfway there in a journey toward revelation at Sinai. Lyric reflection: “Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear.” Could also explore themes of bitachon (trust) and communal support in growth.

Editor’s note: per Laura’s genius suggestion, I’ve put this song at the Omer’s half-way point. Thanks Laura!

The song that Latke Recipe is based on (Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon) is a terrific song that my wife and I love to swing dance to. Since The Maccabeats turned it into my absolute favorite song of theirs a couple of Chanukahs ago, I’ve had a hard time deciding which I like better, their parody or the original. Learn More.

With all of the overplaying of Christmas carols, now starting even before Thanksgiving, this one, written by Jewish Irving Baline, always makes me smile. It’s secular, and provides wonderfully tranquil winter vistas.

Im Nin’alu – (“If the gates are locked”) is a Hebrew poem by 17th-century Rabbi Shalom Shabazi. It has been set to music and sung by Israeli singer Ofra Haza. The link below is the original version, which was included on the 1984 album Yemenite Songs (also known as Fifty Gates of Wisdom). The remixed version was part of her 1988 international debut album Shaday, and was a hit in Europe.

The late Ofra Haza was a major influence on modern Israeli music. She had a beautiful voice, and her music helped bring Mizrachi influences into Israeli pop music. Her choice of material could be secular, or very religious such as this song. There are remixed versions of some of the more religious and traditional songs, such as the disco version of Im Nin’alu and the “Ze’hoog Mix” (“Hot Sauce Mix”) of Galbi. But I prefer the original versions. The original versions are better at conveying the Jewish Soul of the tunes. Yet they still feel modern. Learn More.
