Im Nin’alu – (“If the gates are locked”) is a Hebrew poem by 17th-century Rabbi Shalom Shabazi. It has been set to music and sung by Israeli singer Ofra Haza. The link below is the original version, which was included on the 1984 album Yemenite Songs (also known as Fifty Gates of Wisdom). The remixed version was part of her 1988 international debut album Shaday, and was a hit in Europe.

The late Ofra Haza was a major influence on modern Israeli music. She had a beautiful voice, and her music helped bring Mizrachi influences into Israeli pop music. Her choice of material could be secular, or very religious such as this song. There are remixed versions of some of the more religious and traditional songs, such as the disco version of Im Nin’alu and the “Ze’hoog Mix” (“Hot Sauce Mix”) of Galbi. But I prefer the original versions. The original versions are better at conveying the Jewish Soul of the tunes. Yet they still feel modern. Learn More.

As a child, this musical was my favorite. It truly has it all – gripping storyline, beautiful harmonies, fun costumes, song genres ranging from country to go-go. But for decades the line “children of Israel are never alone” has stayed with me.

This is a great band I’ve been following for a few years. They are a New York based Americana/Bluegrass group created by the husband/wife team of Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff.

‘Tree of Life’ was a song they wrote after the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh

They are open and vocal about their Jewish heritage and beautifully weave Jewish tradition and soul into their American roots music. They are on tour now! Go catch them if you can!

I did not expect to hear this song on an alternative music channel. The song helped cheer me up after a rough day at work. Even reading the comments on YouTube is uplifting.
